What happens when the protein macro nutrient is taken in excess?

  • Can’t store protein therefore excess protein in the body will be stored as fat
  • It elevates blood lipids, i.e. cholesterol
  • Certain protein products are high in saturated fats, this can cause heart disease
  • Extra consumption of protein can affect the kidneys

How does protein benefit the body?

  • Protein is made of amino acids
  • The body uses amino acids to build and repair the bones/ muscles – to make hormones and enzymes
  • Speeds up recovery after exercise
  • Reduce muscle loss/ build lean muscle mass
  • Good for the bones. They make up a major part of the mass and volume of bones, creating a meshwork of fibers that lay the foundation for growth
  • Lower blood pressure

Where do you get protein from?

  • Several different foods that are animal based, i.e. Beef, chicken, eggs, fish, etc. However, protein can also be found in some plant based products, i.e. Lentils, any type of nuts, nut butters, chick peas etc., and lastly lab based proteins, these are products you can find on the shelf of stores, ie. Whey protein supplements, high protein milkshake items, and high protein/ additional protein added food and or drink products.
